I read the first chapter and one thing is really liked about was the way Tolkien started if off. From the very first lines, I had the impression that he was telling the story orally and not just writing it.
Bilbo always makes me laugh everytime I read this book. It's amazing to see how much he has changed between this first chapter (where he says adventures are annoying because they make you late for dinner) and LotR where he misses Rivendell, the Mountains and all that.
But Gandalf seemed to know from the very beginning of Bilbo's "Took side". (Bilbo himself did let it slip that adventures weren't all that bad when he his talking with Gandalf) In fact, I think it looks like he was finding this all very funny when the Dwarves were all arriving together and Bilbo didn't have a clue of what was going on!

I agree with Linwe also on the way the story seems to be told orally. I can picture children sitting around a fire and listening. I also like the way Tolkien works the descriptions of everything into the story. Like when the dwarves are coming in and he is telling what color their beards and hoods are etc.

sorry im talkin a little late here lol.... pirates got me distracted...
anyways, yeah i love how tolkien goes into great detail about everything. it gives you such a great mental picture of what the setting looks like, whats going on in the setting, etc. just the opening chapter is amazing enough to pull in a lot of people to want to read this book... well in my opinion.

Well it seems that everyone has read the first chapter now. We will be extending the time to two weeks. The second chapter Roast Mutton will be open for discussion on Friday 21st. Happy Reading.

What is noticed most in the second chapter is how the writing has a more modern feel than Lotr. For example the trolls are named with modern names and speak the same way. I understand why this is, but I really notice it in this chapter. Anyway, I think this chapter is a good read, very amusing.

I Agree, It's Amusing How the Trolls Fight Over the Hobbits.

I find a Short Rest interesting. The elves are so much different than they are in LotR. It is hard to picture the elves of Rivendell being as merry as children. This is also the first chapter where Silmarillion tales are refered to and I think it gives the story some depth. What does everyone else think of the elves?
